Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)

The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an international non-profit organization established in 1993. It promotes responsible management of the world's forests through a voluntary certification system that emphasizes environmental sustainability, social benefits, and economic viability. FSC emerged in response to the 1992 Earth Summit and has since become a leader in sustainable forest management, operating in over 80 countries and certifying vast areas of forest. FSC's mission focuses on ensuring that forest management practices are environmentally appropriate and socially beneficial, aiming to protect forests for future generations. The organization has developed a comprehensive framework consisting of 10 Principles and 57 Criteria that certified forests must meet. These standards cover compliance with laws, biodiversity conservation, and the rights of workers and communities. FSC also offers forest management and chain of custody certifications, which help track certified materials through supply chains, enabling the labeling of products sourced from certified forests.
