Its primary mission is to enhance liquidity, stability, and affordability in the secondary mortgage market by securitizing mortgages into mortgage-backed securities (MBS). This process allows lenders to reinvest capital into new home loans, thereby expanding access to homeownership. Operating under the conservatorship of the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA), Fannie Mae plays a crucial role in the housing finance system. It purchases mortgages from lenders, pools them, and issues MBS to investors. This activity provides liquidity to lenders and standardizes underwriting processes through its platforms.
