The British Army is the land warfare force of the United Kingdom, tasked with defending the UK, its Overseas Territories, and Crown Dependencies. Established in 1707, it was formed by uniting the English and Scottish armies. As of January 1, 2025, the British Army consists of 73,847 regular personnel, 4,127 Gurkhas, 25,742 volunteer reserves, and 4,697 other personnel, totaling 108,413 members. The British Army is organized into two main commands: the Field Army and Home Command, each led by a lieutenant general. The Field Army prepares forces for operations and includes the 1st and 3rd (United Kingdom) Divisions. The army has a rich history of involvement in major global conflicts and is currently focused on modernization and collaboration with allied forces, including support for NATO operations. Members of the British Army pledge allegiance to the monarch and are administered by the Ministry of Defence.
