California Institute of the Arts

The California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) is a private coeducational institution located in Valencia, California. Established in 1961 through the merger of the Los Angeles Conservatory of Music and the Chouinard Art Institute, CalArts was inspired by Walt Disney's vision of creating a vibrant community for artists. The school opened in 1970 and moved to its current 60-acre campus in 1971, featuring a comprehensive facility designed for artistic education. CalArts offers a range of academic programs across six schools: Art, Critical Studies, Dance, Film/Video, Music, and Theatre. Students can pursue Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) and Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degrees, with an emphasis on interdisciplinary learning and professional training. The campus includes specialized facilities such as theaters, studios, and practice rooms, and it engages with the community through initiatives like the Community Arts Partnership. CalArts has produced many notable alumni who have significantly influenced contemporary arts.
